Intern in Special Operations

Duration: 2/3 months (expected starting date January 2009) 

Background:

Established by the United Nations General Assembly, the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme supports human development globally by actively promoting the concept of volunteerism for development (V4D) that includes the mobilization of volunteers.

This internship should be seen as a learning experience in the area of administrative support, recruitment of UN Volunteers for UN Peacekeeping Missions and an introduction into the daily activities of the recruitment cell of the Special Operations section. It will also give the intern a good insight into the working methods of an international organization, i.e. United Nations Volunteers.

Under the guidance of the Recruitment Associate, the incumbent will assist the Recruitment Cell in the following duties:

  • Assist in contacting the short-listed candidates either by phone or email to determine their interest and exact availability for relevant posts and for sending additional documents (educational certificates, letters of recommendation) at the request and under supervision of the recruiters.
  • Reply to emails sent by prospective candidates.
  • Assist in updating existing (Excel) files on Human Rights clearances, clearances of Medical Doctors and overviews of Special Recruitment Drives.
  • Photocopy or scan CVs/Certificates/relevant correspondence etc.
  • Administer and file (either hard copies or digital documents) CVs/Certificates/relevant correspondence etc.
  • Distribute incoming faxes to respective colleagues within the Special Operations Section.

Qualifications:

  • Candidate must have secondary education and must be enrolled in a Masters Programme, preferably in the area of i.e. International Relations, Political Science, and Humanitarian Assistance.
  • Knowledge and experience in Information technology (MS Word, MS Outlook).
  • A good sense of flexibility, the ability to work under extreme pressure and able to meet deadlines.
  • Experience in the area of administrative support.
  • Fluency in English. Working knowledge of any other UN language is an asset.
  • A basic interest in the United Nations and in the area of humanitarian relief, peacekeeping, electoral support would be an asset.

  • Interns will not receive monetary compensation for their work.  Costs and arrangements for travel, visa, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern.
  • UNV accepts no responsibility for the intern’s medical insurance or for costs arising from illness during the internship.  Interns are required to provide proof of medical insurance coverage.
