Almost all UNV volunteers accounted for
19 January 2010 Bonn, Germany: UNV has determined the location and status of almost all UNV volunteers serving in Haiti at the time of the 12 January earthquake. Of the 222 people serving at the time, a total of 220 have been accounted for. UNV is urgently seeking confirmation about the remaining two UNV volunteers, who were serving with the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH). A total of 206 UNV volunteers were serving with MINUSTAH. One, Nivah Odwori of Kenya, died in the earthquake. Another seven were medically evacuated. A further 16 UNV volunteers were serving with UNDP, WFP, FAO and UNICEF. All of these volunteers have now been accounted for. UNV continues to work closely with UN partners and others to determine the location and status of the two volunteers and we are in continuous contact with the families. UNV is also seeking information on two Haitian UNV volunteers serving abroad, who were believed to have been on leave in Haiti at the time of the earthquake. We are assisting other Haitian UNV volunteers serving abroad to locate and contact their families. |
