Introduction by Wilfred Tokpah, Programme Officer WFP sub-office in Hargeisa, Somalia

All around the world, UNV volunteers are making immense contributions in response to the global food crisis and to improve health and nutrition in the long term.

UNV volunteers are posted at country and field offices with UN agencies such as the World Food Programme (WFP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), playing a meaningful role in day-to-day activities in spite of the risks this sometimes entails. These volunteers serve as bridges for the connection of communities, regions and countries.

UNV volunteers work with communities with insecure food supplies to identify the underlying causes of the crisis and undertake feasible actions to reduce its level. Another mainstay of UNV is the provision of technical assistance that enables communities to increase their food production.

Our volunteers also work with governments on policies relevant to the looming food crisis. Their activities may involve the collection of accurate data for the efficient utilization of scarce resources; they may also participate in joint inter-agency and Government needs food security assessments and surveys. The outcomes of these often lead to targeted food distribution to vulnerable populations. Finally, the role of UNV volunteers in the existing food crisis is critical to the very existence of destitute communities.
