The 'Volunteering for our Planet' story competition
UN Volunteers and staff from 30 countries submitted more than 50 entries to the International Volunteer Day 2009 story competition, including personal accounts, fictional stories, photo essays and videos.

The stories celebrate the inspiration and engagement of volunteers around the world, and illustrate how volunteering has become an essential part to the solution to climate change. Volunteerism is making a difference and anybody can volunteer for our planet.

The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme extends its appreciation to all participants for their huge effort in making this competition a success!

And what about my students? It would be great if they could see how wonderful double rainbows, which embrace the world, are when you watch them on a mountain top or in a canoe. And how amazing it is to watch the sunset in the mountains.

Then, perhaps, they wouldn't have let small rivers die, mountains and woods sink in litter, trees be uncontrollably cut. Or any other actions which lead to climate change and endanger the life of mankind.

Seeing the wood for the trees

Though refugees escaping conflict at home have it tough, there are still ways to minimize their impact on the environment. Shiferaw Mekonnen from UNHCR explains how voluntary efforts led to halving the amount of firewood needed by refugees in Tanzania, and how they planted millions of seedlings to help replace the forests.
