The UNV programme supports capacity building in their home countries. They facilitate networking and mobilize local volunteer efforts. They play active roles as interface between local communities and international organizations.

UNV volunteers recruited nationally have at least three years of professional experience. They offer expertise in administration, agriculture, communication, community development, commerce, education, engineering, environment, health, information communication technology and social sciences.

National UNV volunteer assignments usually last 24 months. However, assignments of 6 to 12 months are increasingly common.
