Child Protection Officer - Protection from Violence and Abuse - Tanzania

The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme is seeking a qualified Norwegian national for the following UNV volunteer position:

Post Title: Child Protection Officer – Protection from Violence and Abuse
Host Agency: UNICEF 
Duty Station: Dar es Salaam, United Republic of Tanzania
Language: Language skills:  Excellent communication skills and ability in written and spoken English. Kiswahili would be advantageous but not essential
Duration: Two years

Under the direction and overall guidance of the UNDP Resident Representative, the UNV PO is expected to perform the following functions:

Duties and responsibilities
Under the supervision of Child Protection Specialist – Most Vulnerable Children, the UNV volunteer will be responsible for:

  • Support/facilitate Interagency Management Team which will undertake the Child Abuse and Violence Study in Tanzania, in accordance with the following study objectives to:
    • Describe the magnitude of the problem of all forms of violence against children;
    • Identify potential risk and protective factors for violence against children;
    • Assess the knowledge and utilisation of health and other services available for victims of violence;  
    • Use data to help guide national policies, laws and programmes to prevent violence against children;
    • Make recommendations on improving and enhancing interventions to better identify, and prevent violence against children and to ensure access to services for its health-related consequences, etc; 
    • Identify areas for further research.
  • Undertake a mapping of Civil Society Organisations working in relation to issues of child abuse and violence
  • Undertake a desk review of current research and literature in relation to child abuse and violence and specific to the Tanzanian context
  • Provide a child rights based analysis of the policy and legislative environment in relation to child abuse and violence in the United republic of Tanzania
  • Propose recommendations for a national strategy for prevention and response  to child abuse and violence

Qualifications and Experience Required

  • Masters Degree in Social Sciences, Human Rights or related technical field. Experience in work with children or in the areas of social work, or child protection will be an added advantage 
  • Knowledge of and experience of work with children’s / human rights 
  • Knowledge and experience of development programmes with children
  • Knowledge of and application of international child rights instruments
  • Analytical, negotiating, communication and advocacy skills
  • Experience in research methodologies, ethics and analysis
  • Ability to work at varying levels, including with UN and Government partners, Civil Society organisations and local communities 
  • Computer skills: Experience in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint packages
