Technical Advisor - Gender Mainstreaming - Nicaragua

The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme is seeking a qualified Norwegian national for the following UNV volunteer position:

Post Title: Technical Advisor to support gender mainstreaming in the UN offices in Nicaragua
Host Agency: United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) 
Duty Station: Nicaragua
Language: Fluency in English and Spanish
Duration: Two years
Application Deadline: 15 January 2009 (only Norwegian nationals may apply)

Under the supervision of Gender Programme Officer, who coordinates the focal points of gender of the UN system agencies, the UNV volunteer will:

  • Provide technical assistance in the area of gender and related issues;
  • Promote and monitor gender actions in institutional programs strengthening the National Assembly and the political parties;
  • Support the implementation of projects on domestic and sexual violence and HIV-AIDS;
  • Provide support to other UN agencies that require assistance in mainstreaming gender equality in specific projects and programs;
  • Assist in the implementation of the interagency gender program financed by the Spanish Millennium Development Goals Achievement Fund MDG-F and others interagency gender actions of the UN system;
  • Facilitate the coordination between the different partners involved in gender mainstreaming such as UN agencies, donor community, Universities and NGOs with the objective to enhance integration of gender themes in programming;
  • Promote the participation of local governments and communities for sustainable behavioural changes;
  • Plan and implement Information, Education, and Communication activities on gender issues.

Qualifications and Experience Required

  • Master's Degree in Social or Political Sciences with knowledge of gender and human rights
  • Experience in the application of the gender perspective in developments projects (at least 2/3 years relevant work experience)
  • Good writing skills including writing reports
  • Committed to gender equality
  • High sensitivity to cultural diversity, respect of  human rights and adaptability
  • Demonstrates strong coaching/mentoring skills
  • Strong IT skills (Word, Excel, Power Point)
