Project Title: UNV Support to UNMIS in Sudan
Duration: 6 months, renewable contract based on performance and mission mandate
Location, Country: Sudan, anywhere in the mission area

Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the General Services Officer, the UNV volunteers will be responsible for the following duties:
- Ensure the Facility has the look and feel of a functioning three-star hotel; design and supervise implementation of preventative and emergency maintenance relating but not limited to garden and grounds, accommodation, ablution blocks and other sanitation facilities, catering, laundry, medical care, recreation, cleaning and garbage collection services;
- Manage the daily activities of UN staff and contractors; effectively administering staff contracts; ensuring the constant personal and technical development of all UN Staff being supervised, with special attention to on-the-job training;
- Generate and review work orders for engineering and assign day-to-day repair and maintenance tasks to tradesmen and technicians in the team;
- Report the daily activities of facility management unit, ensure proper utilization of available resources;
- Resolve basic maintenance problems and inspect quality of work and work performance; issue instructions at site, record variances, supervise and record measurements of areas serviced;
- Follow up on correction of defects in provided facility support services;
- Periodically provide inputs for assessment of performance levels of assigned local staff;
- Ensure that regular fire and emergency evacuation drills are performed; and
- Perform other duties as required.
In addition, UNV volunteers are expected to promote volunteerism and/or engage in volunteering activities. As such they are encouraged to:
- Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and other publications and taking active part in UNV activities;
- Get acquainted with traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host community;
- Network and build relationships with local organizations, groups or individuals and support and/or participate in local volunteering initiatives;
- Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Technical training in relevant Hotel operations and/or Camp management.
- Valid national driving license.
- At least 5 years of progressively responsible experience in Hotel operations and/or Camp Management in a private, commercial, mining or military environment.
- Proven and continuous performance record.
- MS Office, Internet and Lotus Notes as end user; knowledgeable in the use of common desktop software and project management software.
- Fluency in spoken and written English; knowledge of a Arabic and/or a second UN language is an advantage.
- Experience in Africa, and particularly in remote locations is highly desirable.

* Professionalism: Knowledge and experience in hotel/camps management and maintenance project implementation and supervision; demonstrated ability to solve facility support service problems; commitment to implementing equal participation and full involvement of women and men in all aspects of Facility operations.
* Planning and Organizing: Effective skills in raising, assigning and following up on project schedules and work orders; demonstrated ability to determine work required and assign the same correctly according to skills capability of available staff.
* Communication: Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
* Technological Awareness: Awareness of technological advances in hotel industry; good technical skills and knowledge of appropriate safety environmental regulations and local by-laws; demonstrated initiative and willingness to learn new skills.
* Teamwork: Good interpersonal skills; ability to work in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity and gender.
Conditions of living

UNV volunteers assigned to UNMIS should be prepared to be deployed anywhere within Sudan, including remote duty stations. The living conditions in these duty stations are variable and may involve living in containers, or in a few cases, in tented camps. Women in Darfur and in Sudan in general wear long skirts or dresses, light shirts with long sleeves, long pants and usually cover their necks. If you are female, it is advisable to carry a scarf with you at all times.
Please note that Sudan is a non-family duty station.
Conditions of Service
A 6-month contract (renewable); monthly volunteer living allowance (VLA) intended to cover housing, basic needs and utilities, equivalent to US$ 2,379 for single person, US$ 2,679 for person with one dependant, and US$ 2,879 for person with two or more recognized dependants; hazard pay; settling-in-grant; life, health, and permanent disability insurance; return airfares; resettlement allowance of US$ 150 per month of satisfactory service.
