BONN: In 1999, the number of UN Volunteers surpassed previous records to reach 4,755 assignments carried out by a total number of 4,383 UN Volunteers:
  • international UNV specialists: 3,041 (69%)
  • national UNV specialists: 763 (18%)
  • international UNV field workers: 141 (3%)
  • national UNV field workers: 438 (10%)

In addition, 54 UNISTAR short-term advisers carried out 61 missions :

  • UNV countries of assignment: 139
  • UNV nationalities: 149
  • UNVs from developing countries: 64%
  • UNVs from industrialized countries: 36%
  • women: 36%
  • men: 64%

The countries supplying the most UN Volunteers in 1999 were:

  • Philippines: 132
  • Spain: 130
  • Belgium: 128
  • Japan: 118
  • Nepal: 113

The countries hosting the most UNVs in 1999 were:

  • Indonesia (incl. East Timor): 641
  • Guatemala: 223
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina: 189
  • Yugoslavia (incl. Kovovo): 176
  • Nigeria: 117
  • Central African Republic: 114
  • Cambodia: 111
