Country Overview: UN Volunteers in Ethiopia

01 February 2003

The United Nations Volunteers programme (UNV) has been operating in Ethiopia since the early 1970s. Previous UNV activities in Ethiopia focused on education, agriculture, health and water. Today, Ethiopia's key development challenges and opportunities lie in sustained economic growth, productive employment, food security and sustainable agricultural development, access to basic social services, good governance and combating HIV/AIDS. The United Nations Development Programe (UNDP), in conjunction with the Ethiopian Government, is finalizing arrangements for the establishment of a national UN Volunteers programme. The aim of the programme is to provide national volunteers with the opportunity to take part in the country's development process. Also, it is hoped a national volunteer programme will strengthen support for the use of national volunteers as key players in effectively understanding local and national development needs.

UNV's current contribution to Ethiopia
Currently, there are 15 international UN Volunteers serving in Ethiopia, working with the World Food Programme (WFP) the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Save the Children U.K. Programme. Specific UNV assignments include:

  • a Nigerian demographer operating under UNFPA;
  • a Sudanese nutritionist working for WFP;
  • a fully-funded Danish physiotherapist providing community and home-based phyisotherapy to children with disabilities;
  • an Australian biological soil conservation adviser working under WFP; and
  • volunteers from Ghana, Sierra Leone, Sudan and Uganda working with the WFP country sub-offices taking up posts ranging from assistant logistics officer to sub-office deputy head.

Ethiopia's contribution to UN Volunteers
There are 25 Ethiopians serving as international UN Volunteers with an additional 61 on the UNV roster for potential assignments. Ethiopian volunteers are:

  • working as water, sanitation and housing specialists with UNHCR in Afghanistan;
  • providing logistical support to the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL); and
  • supporting the United Nations Organization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo by working as administrative assistants, budget officers, doctors, camp managers and travel assistants.
UNV is administered by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)
