Among these, 25 are assigned out of Asmara, the capital of Eritrea, mostly in the sectors for the temporary security zone between Eritrea and Ethiopia. Sixteen are assigned to engineering; 15 in administration and logistics; 11 in transport; six work in the medical unit; and three are responsible for the movement (MOVCON) of personnel and material by road, rail, sea and air, into and out of the area of operations and across internal borders or ceasefire lines, buffer zones and areas of separation. The remaining UN Volunteers are in air operations, finance, communications, human rights, publication information, supply and geographic cell.

Currently, 10 UN Volunteers are serving outside of UNMEE. Five UN Volunteers are attached to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). They work as a public health specialist, a programme officer, field officer, information technology (IT) specialist and a telecommunications technician. The World Food Programme (WFP) has two administrative assistants, one assistant programme officer and one programme officer. The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has one UN Volunteer working in disease control as a public health inspector.
