Bonn, Germany: United Nations Volunteers (UNV) Executive Coordinator Ad de Raad welcomes UN Deputy Secretary-General Asha-Rose Migiro on her first official visit to the UN campus in Bonn.

Dr Migiro later addressed the collected staff of the 13 agencies based in Bonn. She noted that UNV mobilises thousands of volunteers every year.

“If we are to achieve the MDGs we will need to make real progress to propel us forward,” she said.

Dr Migiro was appointed as Deputy Secretary-General on 5 February 2007 after serving as Tanzania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation from 2006-2007. Before that, she was Minister for Community Development, Gender and Children for five years.

Dr Migiro was in Germany for one of a series of meetings in Europe. In Bonn she met with European development ministers before direct talks with Germany’s Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul.
