Muhammad Afrianto Kurniawan, UN Volunteer with UNICEF in Timor-Leste
20 November 2011 Dili, Timor-Leste: Since January 2010, Muhammad Afrianto Kurniawan has been engaging communities in Timor-Leste as a UN Volunteer WASH (Water Sanitation and Hygiene) engineer with UNICEF. Muhammad is a central figure in liaising with several ministry officials and local community members. He travels often to project sites which can be a struggle because of poor road conditions. On the other hand, he appreciates not only the beautiful landscape of Timor-Leste, but also the friendliness of the Timorese. With family health promoters and local community members, Muhammad works towards promoting good hygiene practices such as hand washing with soap and preventing open defecation. “For me, working as a UN Volunteer with UNICEF in Timor-Leste allows me a great opportunity to help many children who need access to clean water and basic sanitation facilities which will improve their basic standard of living and provide them with the means to be healthy and happy in the future,” says Muhammad. |
