UNV mourns volunteers lost in plane crash in the Democratic Republic of Congo

08 April 2011

Kinshasa, DRC: The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme is deeply saddened by the deaths of three UN Volunteers who were among those killed in the plane crash at Kinshasa airport in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Monday 4 April.

Mr. Carlos Manuel Bastos De Barros, 46, from Sao Tome and Principe; Mr. Jeroen Bervoets, 29, from Belgium; and Ms. Esinam Safo, 31, from Ghana, were in the plane along with UNDP colleagues and those from other UN entities.

All three worked for the Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) and are sorely missed by loved ones, colleagues, and the entire UNV family.

UNV Executive Coordinator Flavia Pansieri will be personally extending her condolences to family and friends at the memorial ceremonies being held in DRC.
UNV is administered by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)
