UNV-supported low energy stove on display at climate change conference

Marie Johansson (left) and Tweendeni Andreas, with Creative Entrepreneurs Solutions, display a low energy, low pollution cookstove assembled at their workshop in Odangwa, Namibia.  Their company implements the CBA programme in Namibia where they are encouraging rural communities to mitigate climate change by using these stoves instead of open fires for cooking and heating, to reduce deforestation, desertification and greenhouse gas emissions. Odangwa, Namibia: A simple cookstove developed as part of the UNV-supported Community Based Adaptation (CBA) programme in Namibia is getting its moment in the spotlight at the current United Nations Climate Change Conference in Durban, South Africa. The EzyStove is a fuel-efficient, easy-to-use and environmentally friendly stove designed for poor rural households dependent on burning wood or paper on open fires for their cooking and heating. Aceh, Indonesia: PULIH Aceh collaborated with the New Men’s Alliance, Rifka Annisa and the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) to initiate the project, Working with Men and Boys to Prevent Violence Against Women in Indonesia. It is supported by Partners for Prevention, which is a regional joint programme on the prevention of gender-based violence for Asia and the Pacific implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), UN Women and the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme. Rabat, Morocco: Adélise Gobillot from Belgium is a UN Volunteer intern who provides support to the UNAIDS office in Rabat, Morocco. She actively participates in the work carried out by UNAIDS together with communities, government and other UN agencies to reduce the number of new HIV infections, advance human rights in the response to HIV/AIDS, and address the vulnerability of women, girls and sexual minorities in Morocco. UNV Doctors play key role in fight against HIV/AIDS

UN Volunteer Dr. Mubiala Ekwala Nicodeme (DRC), HIV Programme Supervisor for Malawi’s Northern Zone, uses a police boat to reach Likoma Island on Lake Malawi, thus ensuring this remote area is included in national efforts to improve and strengthen the health system and HIV prevention, treatment and care. Malawi: Today, 35 of the 55 UNV Doctors currently in Malawi make up the driving force behind the Malawi Government’s projects to strengthen the health system and continue and improve HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and care in the country. Read
