Putting volunteer work on the economic map

Maryland, USA: The International Labour Organization and the Johns Hopkins University Center for Civil Society Studies today announced an agreement to develop an approach for putting volunteer work on the economic map for the first time. Also announced was a start-up grant from the United Nations Volunteers to help underwrite this effort. Read

UNV volunteers improve health care services for children in Burundi

Kamenge, Burundi: UNV volunteers at the Roi Khaled Hospital in Kamenge, north of Bujumbura, have been working for days on renovating one of four paediatric wards at the hospital. Including everything from overhauling the sanitation facilities to repairing mosquito nets and crumbling walls, as well as organizing donations of medicine. Read

UNV volunteers recognized for work in missing persons project

UNV volunteers are honoured for their service in Kosovo.
Pristina, Kosovo: Five members of the UNV programme in Kosovo are among 20 people recently honoured for their work in a Missing Persons and Forensics Project (OMPF). The Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Kosovo, Joachim Rücker, handed UN 21 awards to international UNV volunteers Adidja Asman (Burundi), Klaire Kasibayo (Uganda), James Nicholls (UK), Olajide Sunday Animasaun (Nigeria), and Omololu Owolabi (Nigeria) on March 16. Thimphu, Bhutan: Goodwill ambassadors Ronaldo and Zinédine Zidane have taken to heart the fight against poverty by sponsoring the Match Against Poverty.
