The Sunday Times Sri Lanka announced that nominations were open for the National Volunteer Awards (V awards) 2013 at a media briefing held in Colombo on Tuesday, September 3. The news outlet said that through the V Awards, organized by News First in collaboration with the United Nations Volunteers and the Ministry of Social Services, "the nation salutes the silent work of hitherto unknown volunteers for their selfless contributions." The Times of India reported that "1 in 10 men in Asia Pacific has raped an unknown woman" in their article on the UN Multi-country Study on Men and Violence jointly launched today by UNDP, UNFPA, UN Women and UNV through their regional joint programme Partners for Prevention.  The study was based on interviews with 10,000 men at nine sites in six countries in the Asia-Pacific and its authors stress that the findings are representative of the study sites but not representative of the entire Asia-Pacific region. UN Volunteers in Liberia raise funds for regular voluntary charity programs

UN Volunteers in Liberia organized the “Ocean Night Party” on 31 August at Anglers Bar and Grill in Monrovia to raise funds for their regular voluntary charity programs. More than 500 participants joined the party from UNMIL, UN agencies and international NGOs with a minimum subscription raised by a dedicated voluntary team these last weeks. In his message on occasion of International Day of Charity on 5 September, the UN Secretary-General sees volunteerism and, specifically, UNV, as important elements of compassion and sharing towards establishing a peaceful future for all. UNV Cambodia and local youth channel join transfusion center in blood drive

UNV Cambodia joined with multimedia youth channel Loy9 and the National Blood Transfusion Centre in Phnom Penh in organizing a national blood donation campaign in June.  With the motto "Give Blood, Give Love", the campaign aims to attract 999 donations in nine days in nine different locations. Richard Dictus, 52, new head of the U.N. Volunteers program, visited Japan in early March to express his gratitude to Japanese who volunteered to work for the organization. “We have been very, very appreciative of the incredible work that Japanese volunteers have done within the U.N. and the overall contribution of Japan,” Dictus said.
