Bukavu, DR Congo: UNV volunteers Mariya Stoeva and Mohamed Sadiq Ameer are in the Democratic Republic of Congo to ensure that members of MONUC, the UN’s current largest mission, receive safe, quality food. As a volunteer food inspector, Ms Stoeva (Bulgaria) performs a range of duties ranging from rations control to warehouse and food handler inspections. She also ensures that MREs (ready-to-eat meals) in storage meet hygiene and quality standards for their consumption during field operations.

Mr Ameer (Sri Lanka) is part of the Rations Unit that sees to it that the military units are provided for properly. His main responsibilities include scheduling the delivery of fresh food to military contingents in the Bukavu sector as well as compiling the delivery notes for the database.

The Rations Unit plays a central role in providing the necessary food and water for all operations directly connected to headquarters. In this photo, the two arrange pallets used to store MREs at MONUC Headquarters in Bukavu.

UNV is administered by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)
