Recycling waste paper
by Mohammed Ibrahim Koroma

18 August 2010

My name is Mohamed Ibrahim Koroma. I am a Sierra Leonean currently working as Common Premises Manager for the UN Agencies as a UNV volunteer. Before joining UNDP in East Timor in 2006, I was with UNOPS in Afghanistan but not as a volunteer.

As a Premises Manager, I bring along leadership to common services in the UN Premises, managing and facilitating the efficient running and maintenance with a client-oriented approach. I supervise and lead the Common Services support staff and outsource service providers who are mainly Timorese.

I also oversee the implementation of a joint greening activity with a local environmental NGO, Haburas Foundation, for the paper recycling project. This project is a joint environmental initiative between the Haburas Foundation with the collaboration of UNMIT, and the UNCT.

The focus of the project is to replace firewood with the production of cooking briquettes made out of waste shredded papers collected from the UN Agencies and UNMIT, and with other agro organic industrial waste.

The waste paper from the UN Agencies and UNMIT is stored in a collection area at the UN Agencies compound.  In the long run, this initiative will lessen the chopping down of trees thus maintaining forestation and avoiding land degradation.

This initiative began as a request from Haburas Foundation to UNV on the voluntary contribution of shred paper from the UN premises. The project also has the objective towards advocating, researching and implementing of environmentally responsible natural resource management for the sustainable development of Timor-Leste.

Additionally, it provides employment opportunities for the local youth groups and an environment-friendly disposal method that contributes generally to the reduction of carbon and other hazardous emissions into the atmosphere.

I chose to become a UNV volunteer to contribute to and support the socio-economic development of the people of Timor-Leste. I provide support services to the UNDP project staff, creating a friendly working environment, permitting sustainable project implementation for Timor-Leste.

UNV is administered by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)
