Cambodia: UN Online Volunteer Steve Tierney, an Australian designer, created a poster that called for students across Cambodia to participate in an essay contest, sharing their ideas about how to prevent violence against women and promote gender equality and human rights.

About 350 students participated in the contest, which was organized by UN Women Cambodia in collaboration with the Paññasastra University of Cambodia.  More than 200 students attended the award ceremony on 5 December 2011, during which the 5 winners read their essays.

“Steve developed a poster in a very short period of time and we were very happy with the results,” says Clara Magariño Manero, a UN Volunteer Project Officer with UN Women. For Steve, who is currently residing in Phnom Penh, graphic design is a tool for giving people a voice.

“I am interested in using my professional skills in areas that can help influence the positive changes that are happening in Cambodia as young people become more educated.”
