Telling the stories of teenage mothers
31 May 2013
Joceline, almost 25, lives with her two children (8 and 6) and their father. She abandoned school at the age of 17, after the birth of her first child. Quite often she has nothing to eat during the day. She is considering going to Port-au-Prince to try her luck at a stable job as a servant. If she goes, however, her children will most likely become restavecs (a modern type of slavery). She dreams about having the means to take good care of her children, and to stop being abused by her partner. One day she would also like to return to school. (Agnieszka Napierala, 2013)
Miragoâne, Haiti: I would like their stories to be heard and their faces to be seen: to portray teen mothers in their living and working environments, collect their testimonies and show the consequences of early pregnancy. Read

Miragoâne, Haiti: As a long-time human rights activist, wherever I am, I always try to integrate civil society, to support it and to share experiences. This is also one of the reasons why I decided to make a career break and to become a UN Volunteer with the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme. While I was getting to know civil society better, in mid-November I came across the Ministry of Women’s Affairs in Miragoâne (Haiti). Since 1993, 25 November is the best occasion to break and rebreak the silence around gender-based violence (GBV). Read

Port-au-Prince, Haiti: One of the most exciting things about being a UN Volunteer is having the chance to work across diverse activities which aim to help the Haitian people in a variety of ways. Being the focal point for ten separate Community Violence Reduction events to mark International Day of Peace on 21 September gave me exactly such an opportunity. Read

Port-au-Prince, Haiti:

The objective of the workshop Training of Trainers on writing English correspondence and reports in a peacekeeping mission, which took place in the Integrated Mission Training Centre (IMTC) in Log Base, MINUSTAH (Port-au-Prince), was to become more familiar with the uses of each type of written communication in the United Nations. It included several sections on editorial conventions related to abbreviations, capitalization, editing tips or spelling

Liberia: "One day, when my buddies and I were talking about different problems in the world, we realized that it’s because there was no real peace. I decided then and there how my life should be. I wanted to contribute in some small way. By becoming a UN Volunteer in a peacekeeping mission I am doing my bit for a peaceful world. I believe in dialogue and peace." Read
