Bonn, Germany: The family of two former UNV volunteers has been hit by tragedy following the Haiti earthquake. New Zealand media report that Emmanuel Rejouis, who had volunteered with UNV in Africa and Asia, died along with two of his young daughters. Read

Bonn, Germany: The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme is deeply saddened by the death of UNV volunteer Ms. Nivah Odwori, 36, of Kenya who died in the Haiti earthquake. Ms. Odwori was among the UNV volunteers whose details could not be confirmed after the earthquake struck. Read

Bonn, Germany: UNV is working around the clock to locate UNV volunteers in Haiti and arrange necessary evacuations.

At the time of Tuesday's earthquake, a total of 222 UNV volunteers were stationed in Haiti. As of 16.00 GMT on 14 January 2010, there were 151 UNV volunteers fully accounted for, while UNV was seeking confirmation on the other 71. Read

Bonn, Germany: Haiti has suffered a force 7.0 earthquake and a series of aftershocks resulting in widespread damage, including to the United Nations compound. Communications have been interrupted.

The women keeping ONUCI on the road

"When I arrived at the mission, everyone was stunned," says UNV volunteer Vehicle Mechanic Julme Charles Elza. "They wanted to see how I would get along. They doubted my capability as a woman to perform 'difficult' tasks in the workshop. One day all the colleagues were amazed when my supervisor told me to go and tow a vehicle from Bouaké, about 370km from Abidjan. I went ahead without a moment's hesitation and the job was done perfectly…  Sort of ironically, each time there's a mechanical problem that's a bit complex, men and women now ask me to help assess the situation and come up with an appropriate solution!"
