Port au Prince, Haiti: The Community Violence Section of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti has been crisscrossing the country's cholera affected areas to fill the lack of water purification equipment. Each team is composed of local staff and UNV volunteers who distribute water filters and purification tablets to head teachers, managers of orphanages, churches and other community centres where many people gather. The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme has united with the families of victims of the Haiti earthquake, their former colleagues and friends to express empathy for their grief.
In a memorial service led by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in New York, UNV Executive Coordinator Flavia Pansieri and senior UNV staff attended to express their support for the families of UNV volunteers Nicole Bahaya (30) of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mamadi Conde (43) of Guinea and Nivah Odwori (36) of Kenya. Nangina, Kenya: UNV volunteer Nivah 'Tiga' Odwori, who died in the Haiti earthquake on 12 January, has been laid to rest in her native Kenya. The funeral was attended by about 350 people. Read
