Empowering grassroots governance

This water tank in Saru (Hinjilicut block) was completed in 2009 at the request of the villagers themselves. It is used as a fish farm for small business development, not to mention its usefulness as a water storage facility for washing and other activities. Many of the people here belong to India’s ‘Scheduled Tribes’. The women of Saru joined together in this voluntary self-help group to help each other generate income and press for development projects such as the water tank. (P. Sen/UNV)

Upgrading a vision for a better life

Khirabhati Chhachan (right, talking to Sibaram Das, left) is one of the leaders of the town's self-help groups, and acts as their informal spokeswoman. Unusually for a tribal person, who typically stay close to their traditional lands, with Sibaram's assistance she ventured to a neighbouring state for microenterprise training. Khirabhati now passes on the knowledge she gained to other community members, and hopes to set up her own beauty parlour business soon. Another 100 women are involved in mushroom cultivation. (P.
