New MDG cartoons for Kosovo
22 January 2009 Pristina, Kosovo: For IVD, the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme team in Kosovo commissioned a local artist to come up with a new spin on the Millennium Development Goals. The house signifies Millennium Development Goal 1: eradicate extreme poverty and hunger. For Millennium Development Goal 2, achieve universal primary education, a child gazes through a window in the shape of a book. Promoting gender equality and empowering women, Millennium Development Goal 3, puts a woman and a man on the same level. Millennium Development Goal 4, reduce child mortality, is not unlike the logo of the Red Cross. Improving maternal health, Millennium Development Goal 5, is a poignant reminder that every minute a woman dies due to complications of pregnancy or childbirth. We see the well-known red ribbon symbol for Millennium Development Goal 6, combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases. Millennium Development Goal 7 is a call to action to ensure environmental sustainability. Finally, Millennium Development Goal 8 of global partnerships for development is signified by distant balloons.
