Vientiane, Lao People's Democratic Republic: The Lao Red Cross National Blood Transfusion Centre joined forces with UN agencies for a blood donation day.

Elizabeth Bransfield from the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme said to The Vientiane Times: "Due to the overwhelming support of staff in August this year [2008], UNV organized this second event to coincide with IVD.

"From our past learning we now appreciate that the safest source of blood is from regular and repeat voluntary unpaid blood donors. Donating once, though very welcome, is not enough," she concluded.
