Victoria Díaz-García, an Irish Aid sponsored UNV intern and Urs Bernhard, a Swiss sponsored UNV intern, have done the arduous six-day-long trip along Río Coco to provide gender training and technical monitoring to the indigenous Miskitu communities of Raití and Walakitán, two of the most Northeastern communities located in the department of Jinotega. León, Nicaragua: A UN Volunteer in Nicaragua has significantly raised public awareness of issues concerning children and youth by negotiating free weekly air time for child rights advocates. Tanya Urquieta from the United States, who has just completed a 15-month assignment as a UN Volunteer, arranged radio spots of up to 30 minutes each week and five short programmes daily to sensitize the local population on child and youth issues. Bonn, Germany: Thanks to an initiative employed by UNV and UNDP in Nicaragua, 50 young Nicaraguan students have traded classrooms for the field to help with the reconstruction of their country in the aftermath of hurricane Mitch. They have been part of a special brigade formed to support the Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Project, aimed at addressing the country’s dire needs after this devastating natural disaster. Read
