Depuis 1970, le Programme VNU est opérationnel au Burundi dans la plupart de secteurs traditionnels du développement social et économique. Pendant presqu’une vingtaine d’années, la plupart des VNUs en poste au Burundi ont surtout oeuvré dans les secteurs du Développement rural, de la santé, de l’éducation et des Organisations non Gouvernementales.
Le Burundi compte actuellement plus de 20 ressortissant qui servent comme VNUI dans le monde: en Guinée, en Côte d’Ivoire, au Soudan, au Kosovo, etc.
