Koukou, Chad: On this International Women’s Day, as the UN calls for an end to violence against women and girls, we relay the remarkable story of UNV volunteer Véronique Derksen of The Netherlands, who is attached to UNHCR in Chad. Owing to a lack of public rubbish collection services and latrines, waste has piled up in the capital N'djamena. The UNV team has brought together groups to rid the capital of garbage and the health risks that come with it. Read
