Three cheers for Liberia
by Aqeel Ahmad
25 November 2005 Monrovia, Liberia: Wow, the elections in Liberia ended with exemplary peace and calm. A sigh of relief and a tribute to Liberian people for the sincerity, discipline and dedication towards the conduct of free, fair and transparent elections for a peaceful bright tomorrow. It is a remarkable achievement of the joint efforts of United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) and the National Elections Commission. We, UN Volunteers, came to this country with hope and aspiration for the re- establishment of peace and prosperity through a democratically elected government. We took pains to enthuse public confidence in democratic elections that would give them the right to choose their own government. We are proud of our contribution towards its successful culmination. Eleven October 2005 will long be remembered as the day of advent of democracy in Liberia. It was amazing to see polling staff in District Sanoyea, Bong County, taking extra pains in setting up polling places tastefully decorated with election materials supplied by UNMIL. People in large groups attired in customary dresses and singing traditional songs thronged the polling places since early morning. The calm and discipline maintained by these people were exemplary. There was not a single case of booth capturing, vote snatching or intimidation in Lower Bong County but a burning desire for a peaceful tomorrow was evident everywhere. People were so appreciative of our (UNMIL’s) efforts that a woman asked: “Can I vote for UNMIL to form a government in Liberia?” I was stunned with the confidence of people in the effective role of UNMIL. I am grateful for being a part of the Liberian election. Tomorrow, we fly to another dark corner of the world to bring peace and prosperity, but Liberian election will ever remain green in our memories. People of Liberia deserve kudos for this achievement. May God be there lasting peace and prosperity so that Liberia could find its rightful place among the comity of nations!
