'Education Caravan' strengthens volunteer initiatives in Mauritania

Nouakchott, Mauritania: The Education Caravan initiative is based on a project for strengthening volunteer initiatives for education in cities and rural areas, based on agreements signed between UNDP, UNV and the Marième Diallo Institute, a partner of the Mauritanian students’ Amicale. The objective was to raise awareness on the importance of education for local development. Read

Through children’s eyes: Raising environmental issues in Kosovo

Pristina, Kosovo: An environmental awareness campaign in Kosovo, led by UNV volunteers, focused on children. In groups, the children were inspired to examine environment issues, making use of the opportunity to exchange ideas and opinions about the Millennium Development Goals and means of harnessing volunteerism to achieve them. Youth voluntary action changes street children’s lives

UNV has been working with the NGO Zemlja djece (Children's Earth) to improve the psycho-social condition of street children and youth, through a spectrum of various educational, counseling and recreational activities. Picture shows a local volunteer teaching a street child how to write.
Tuzla, Bosnia: Since the beginning of 2007, UNV has been working with the NGO Zemlja djece (Children's Earth) to improve the psycho-social condition of street children and youth, through a spectrum of various educational, counseling and recreational activities offered at the TELEX Teenage Centre. For Jasminka Cikaric and Hava Suljic, the Centre in Tuzla was their first real school.  The two former street children had never had formal education before coming here. UNV volunteers provide girls with education opportunity

A UNV-organized girls’ education project involving 50 young girls ages 8-14, who were working full time at the Yamoussoukro market.  The girls were illiterate and do not speak French, and their working environment made them vulnerable and exposed to abuse.

Helping stop child abuse in Malawi

Lilongwe, Malawi: For the past few weeks, UNV volunteer Laura Collins can not help but notice the "Stop Child Abuse" stickers posted in the main town square of the capital Lilongwe. The campaign aims to break the silence around child abuse and convince leaders to commit to prevent and respond to violence, exploitation and abuse against children – including commercial sexual exploitation, trafficking, child labour and harmful traditional practices, such as early marriages. UNV volunteers improve health care services for children in Burundi

Children at Roi-Khaled Hospital
Kamenge, Burundi: UNV volunteers at the Roi Khaled Hospital in Kamenge, north of Bujumbura, have been working for days on renovating one of four paediatric wards at the hospital. Including everything from overhauling the sanitation facilities to repairing mosquito nets and crumbling walls, as well as organizing donations of medicine. Read
