Pristina, Kosovo: An environmental awareness campaign in Kosovo, led by UNV volunteers, focused on children. In groups, the children were inspired to examine environment issues, making use of the opportunity to exchange ideas and opinions about the Millennium Development Goals and means of harnessing volunteerism to achieve them. Tuzla, Bosnia: Since the beginning of 2007, UNV has been working with the NGO Zemlja djece (Children's Earth) to improve the psycho-social condition of street children and youth, through a spectrum of various educational, counseling and recreational activities offered at the TELEX Teenage Centre. For Jasminka Cikaric and Hava Suljic, the Centre in Tuzla was their first real school. The two former street children had never had formal education before coming here. Lilongwe, Malawi: For the past few weeks, UNV volunteer Laura Collins can not help but notice the "Stop Child Abuse" stickers posted in the main town square of the capital Lilongwe. The campaign aims to break the silence around child abuse and convince leaders to commit to prevent and respond to violence, exploitation and abuse against children – including commercial sexual exploitation, trafficking, child labour and harmful traditional practices, such as early marriages. Kamenge, Burundi: UNV volunteers at the Roi Khaled Hospital in Kamenge, north of Bujumbura, have been working for days on renovating one of four paediatric wards at the hospital. Including everything from overhauling the sanitation facilities to repairing mosquito nets and crumbling walls, as well as organizing donations of medicine. Read
