Hamburg, Germany: Two photographs by UN Volunteer Igor Rugwiza (Burundi), Public Information Officer with the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti are featured in the art exhibition Arte Suste Mobile in Hamburg until 30 October 2013. The exhibition is an official project of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development that seeks to mobilize the educational resources of the world to create a more sustainable future. The theme for 2013 is sustainable traffic, mobility and transport. Read

Solving youth problems together

The "Solving Youth Problems Together" Forum was organized by the youth organization Alter-Sport and the 'Young Football Volunteers: Sport and Volunteering for the Millennium Development Goals' project, with its UN Volunteers working in the Mykolaiv region. (UNV, 2013)
Ukraine: Organized by the youth organization Alter-Sport and the 'Young Football Volunteers' project, the Youth Forum "Solving Youth Problems Together" hosted 65 participants to discuss youth-related issues and share experiences in addressing the problems of youth, focusing on positive practices of healthy lifestyle and meaningful leisure activities. UNV Duathalon in South Sudan raises funds for hospital solar panels

Wau, South Sudan: On 15 June 2013, 250 participants ran and bicycled in a five and a half kilometer charity run through Wau, South Sudan.  Organization of the event was spearheaded by a team of UN Volunteers assigned to this UNMISS duty station, who rallied support for all levels of government and sectors of the international and local community. The UNV Duathlon raised enough funds for electricity producing solar panels for the Wau Teaching Hospital and its Maternity Ward. Read

Making the Games

Bonn, Germany: Getting involved in the London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games has proven to be a fantastic, once-in-a-lifetime experience for the 70,000 volunteers assisting the organizers in making the Games happen.

Coming from 70 countries from across the globe and outfitted with purple and red volunteer uniforms, these “Games Makers” were hard to miss in the UK throughout July and August – their work has hit the headlines and displayed the impact had by their Olympic volunteerism. Read

A visit to an indigenous community in Sucumbíos, to conduct workshops and make contributions for the proposal of a joint treaty between the ordinary court and the indigenous justice system, and present certificates to the advocates of The Treaty For Good Coexistence conceptualized by AMNKISE, an indigenous Kichwa women’s association, Lago Agrio, Ecuador. Quito, Ecuador: These multidimensional aspects of my work as a volunteer, inspire and motivate me daily to act, collaborate and contribute to the processes of change that are happening in the Andean and Amazonian regions.  The indigenous women of the region and their social foundations are credited mostly for generating this process.
