Services held for Haiti volunteer

Nangina, Kenya: UNV volunteer Nivah 'Tiga' Odwori, who died in the Haiti earthquake on 12 January, has been laid to rest in her native Kenya. The funeral was attended by about 350 people. Read

Liberian volunteer buried in Monrovia

Monrovia, Liberia: Yah-Lydia Wonyene, who died in the attack on the Bakhtar guesthouse in Kabul during October, was laid to rest last week near her home in Liberia. "Her passing is a tragic loss, and we express our deepest remorse," said UNV Chief of Special Operations, Kevin Gilroy. Read

New Washington, The Philippines: UNV volunteer Jossie G. Esto, who died during the attack on a UN guesthouse in Kabul on 28 October, has been laid to rest in her native Philippines. "Jossie’s memory lives within each of us," said UNV Executive Coordinator Flavia Pansieri. Read

Election public awareness campaign in Kandahar.

As one week remains until the historic presidential and provincial council elections, public awareness campaigns to educate Afghan voters are taking place across the country.

In the southern province of Kandahar, 85 civic educators, among them 12 women, are using flipcharts to raise awareness about the elections.

Forty one presidential candidates and more than 3,000 provincial council hopefuls are taking part in the 20 August elections. (IEC)

Testing resolve but building rapport

A significant part of ELECT’s work involves assisting and advising the principal electoral bodies, namely, the Afghanistan Independent Election Commission (IEC), the Electoral Complaints Commission (ECC), and the Electoral Media Commission.
