Research report: Volunteerism laws and policies since 2001

Bonn, Germany: UNV commissioned this global research study to consider trends and lessons in the development of supportive volunteerism policies and legislation. An overall review was conducted in seven regions, complemented by country-specific case studies in each region. The study analyses considerations in drafting and implementing volunteerism laws and policies, and highlights the need to tailor them to specific local, national and regional contexts. Read

Empowering grassroots governance

This water tank in Saru (Hinjilicut block) was completed in 2009 at the request of the villagers themselves. It is used as a fish farm for small business development, not to mention its usefulness as a water storage facility for washing and other activities. Many of the people here belong to India’s ‘Scheduled Tribes’. The women of Saru joined together in this voluntary self-help group to help each other generate income and press for development projects such as the water tank. (P. Sen/UNV)

Hiroshima volunteer opens paths to Kosovo recovery

The Hiroshima Peacebuilders Center (HPC) funds an increasing number of UNV volunteer assignments in post-conflict areas, so that volunteers from Japan and other Asian countries can gain first-hand experience of the challenges of recovery and contribute to the solutions. The Center is financially supported by the Government of Japan. (UNV)

Testing the water in Sierra Leone

A graduate in agricultural engineering and in water management, Habib ur Rehman (right) worked across the Government and NGOs in his home country and in Kenya before coming to Sierra Leone. He says his inspiration to become a UNV volunteer was not only to get recognition for his skills and to learn more, but to be part of "the UN family and serve humanity". (UNV/P. Sen)
