Bonn, Germany: On the premise that the needs of people living with AIDS are best understood by those affected, UN Volunteers have been providing support to the Greater Involvement of People Living with HIV/AIDS (GIPA), an ongoing initiative of UNDP and the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS). Working within local communities in twelve countries in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean, the volunteers – many of whom are HIV positive – support health and homebased care, challenge stigma and discrimination, strengthen the capacity of self-help networks, and promote prevention programmes. In his native Zimbabwe, he combats the disease throughout Manicaland -- a province of 1.5 million people bordering Mozambique. The first UN Volunteer in PRC was attached to an International Labour Organization (ILO) project in rural development. In 1989, within the Villages Centres Programme of participatory development, many UN Volunteers promoted income-generating activities at the grassroots level. With the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and UNHCR, one UN Volunteer in human rights (HURIST) supports UNDP's efforts in mainstreaming human rights in the development process. Read
