The United Nations Volunteers programme (UNV) supports the Government's national development efforts, including the emergency humanitarian programme, social policy advocacy, community support programmes, employment creation and entrepreneurship, HIV/AIDS advocacy and strengthening of the credibility and transparency of Zimbabwe's public institutions.
UN Volunteers' current contribution to Zimbabwe
Currently, there are 16 UN Volunteers in Zimbabwe. Of these, 12 national UN Volunteers support the National AIDS Council's HIV/AIDS programme. Ten volunteers are in the field assisting provincial and district coordinators with the National AIDS Council in designing strategies and workplans for combating HIV/AIDS. Two national UN Volunteers are working as a researcher and computer specialist. The researcher is responsible for monitoring and collecting reports sent from the HIV/AIDS assistants in the field, which are then stored for future reference by the executive board of the National AIDS Council. The computer specialist is designing a database that will store all the field reports. The database will record the activities of the national UN Volunteers and others working with the Council in its efforts to implement the country's national strategy on HIV/AIDS. It will also serve as a warehouse for best practices in the field of HIV/AIDS. Two international UN Volunteers, a Kenyan and a Malawian, are working as UNV humanitarian field workers with the humanitarian assistance and recovery programme in response to Zimbabwe's drought and subsequent food shortage. A Canadian UN Volunteer works as a communication and advocacy officer liaising with local media and disseminating UN-related information to the public. She is also designing a communications and advocacy unit within the UNV country office. An Irish UN Volunteer works as a legal protection officer with the Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) protecting and promoting the rights of the refugees in Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe's current contribution to UN Volunteers

In Guyana a Zimbabwean works as a legal draftsman to strengthen the country's capacity to reduce poverty. There is a Zimbabwean in the Maldives working as an epidemiologist with the World Health Organization, and another is in Tanzania as a gender specialist with the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF). Uganda has a Zimbabwean working with UNHCR as an English as a second language (ESL) education officer. The monitoring and evaluation field officer with the World Food Programme in Zambia is also Zimbabwean. In Angola, a Zimbabwean is promoting health and nutrition as an assistant health and nutrition specialist with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). Finally, the UNV Programme Officer in Malawi is a Zimbabwean.
