As part of the National Poverty Alleviation Programme, UN Volunteers are supporting individual initiatives such as micro-loans to generate income and improve livelihoods as well as communal schemes, like building roads to better access farm lands. Kampala, Uganda: In early 2003 Tariq Mohammed completed his service as a UN Volunteer under the UNITeS initiative in Uganda. The former Harvard research assistant Tariq Mohammed helped Ugandan students learn how to use information and communications technology (ICT) under the Cisco Networking Academy Programme. The 10 individuals who come from Australia, India, Kenya, the Philippines, Spain, the United States and Zimbabwe, were recognized for their outstanding contributions to organizations in Asia, Africa and Latin America, via UNV's Online Volunteering (OV) service. Timbuktu, Mali: The President of Mali, Amadou Toumani Touré and Mohammed Cissé, Mayor of Timbuktu, on 20 December launched the City of Timbuktu’s official internet site www.tombouctou.net at the Timbuktu community Telecenter. The “mayor’s on-line office” is a UN Volunteers e-governance pilot project designed by volunteers. Read
