Country Overview: UN Volunteers in Sierra Leone

Since January 2000, the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme has supported the United Nations Assistance Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) by supplying a number of UN Volunteers to assist in the peacekeeping mission. Twenty international UN Volunteers are also active in the disarmament, demobilization and reintegration of Sierra Leone's ex-combatants. Read

Bonn, Germany: "How can you help us without giving us money?" asked one of the participants at the inauguration of the project. Firoun Mahamar Maiga, a UN Volunteer recruited from Mali to coordinate the activities, answered : "We will help you to take up your activities of the past; if you had no profession, we will provide training in a project of your choice so you can earn money." Firoun is part of a team of two international and 10 national UN Volunteers helping former combatants take up income-generating activities abandoned long ago. Read

East Timor's Senior Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Jose Ramos Horta (center, black dress) thanked UN Volunteers for their contribution - in both his speech shortly before the flag changing ceremony and at the official opening ceremony of the International People's Park hosted by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan. Prime Minister Mari Alkatiri was among the hundreds of inveted guests who attended the opening ceremony. Bonn, Germany: East Timor has been the largest operation ever in the 31-year history of the United Nations Volunteers programme (UNV). UN Volunteers were among the first international UN personnel to return to East Timor in October 1999, after weeks of violent fighting between opponents and supporters of independence. Read

Dili, East Timor: Some 200,000 East Timorese from all parts of the country were gathered at Taci Tolo site in the outskirts of Dili to witness independence celebrations, led by United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan and President Xanana Gusmao. Read

Currently, 19 United Nations Volunteers based in Pakistan are providing support for activities of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the World Food Programme (WFP), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). The word "Timorization" was as alien to most of us as the word "Development" in East Timor during its colonial past. Immediately after arriving here, I was deputed to work in the Civil Service Academy and impart training to the local civil servants so that they can have effective system of administration and governance in a time bound manner. In short, the mandate was to do a time bound exercise in Capacity Building for the People of East Timor, who in the words of James Dunn have been betrayed time and again. Read
