Planting trees for shade and self-reliance at Sudan refugee camps

Upgrading a vision for a better life

Khirabhati Chhachan (right, talking to Sibaram Das, left) is one of the leaders of the town's self-help groups, and acts as their informal spokeswoman. Unusually for a tribal person, who typically stay close to their traditional lands, with Sibaram's assistance she ventured to a neighbouring state for microenterprise training. Khirabhati now passes on the knowledge she gained to other community members, and hopes to set up her own beauty parlour business soon. Another 100 women are involved in mushroom cultivation. (P. Hiroshima volunteer opens paths to Kosovo recovery

The Hiroshima Peacebuilders Center (HPC) funds an increasing number of UNV volunteer assignments in post-conflict areas, so that volunteers from Japan and other Asian countries can gain first-hand experience of the challenges of recovery and contribute to the solutions. The Center is financially supported by the Government of Japan. (UNV)

Mawlamyine, Myanmar: UNV volunteers serving in their own countries offer the UN skills and access to communities that international staff often cannot. The sheer variety of work performed in Myanmar is just one example.

There are currently nine national UNV volunteers supporting UNHCR in Myanmar. Their roles range from community field monitoring to technical assistance and community social services. Read

Shiferaw Mekonnen from UNHCR explains how voluntary efforts led to halving the amount of firewood needed by refugees in Tanzania, and how they planted millions of seedlings to help replace the forests. Ruyigi, Burundi: The UN estimates that there are 9.2 million refugees and displaced people in the world today. Even if these people do make it back home, they still need somewhere to live.
