Bonn, Germany: Start young, stay green. Throughout 2001, volunteer awareness mushroomed through environmental clubs in tropical Guyana. In less than a year, the number of clubs affiliated with the country's Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) increased from 12 to 55. They span the populated coastland of Guyana and large areas of the interior, with such names as Teenage Action Rangers, Kanuku Environmental Warriors and Young Environmentalists. Read

Freetown, Sierra Leone: Francis Kabina was evacuated from war-wracked Sierra Leone three times, once after anti-government rebels beat him severely and stole his two-way radio unit and the vehicle he was driving. Shaken and disillusioned, the 33-year-old Tanzanian UN Volunteer nearly lost his life under the menace of armed guerrillas. Read

UNV chief addresses World Youth Meeting
29 October 1999
Singapore City, Singapore: Sharon Capeling-Alakija, Executive Coordinator of the Bonn-based United Nations Volunteers programme (UNV), will address the World Youth Meeting in Singapore on 30 October as keynote speaker. The meeting will mark the close of the 12th annual "Ship for the World Youth Programme" during which 264 young people from 17 countries sailed between Japan and South Africa and Singapore. The ship made several stops on the six-week voyage. Read

They have been part of a special brigade formed to support the Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Project, aimed at addressing the country’s dire needs after this devastating natural disaster. Read
