Disaster/Conflict prevention & recovery ![]() The work of UN Volunteers ranges from strengthening community capacity to prevent disasters to supporting and coordinating post-conflict early recovery efforts.
The first line of defence against natural disasters is at the grassroots level. Volunteers within the community are usually the best placed people to manage or avert a crisis while they await assistance from outside. UNV has developed considerable expertise in mobilizing volunteers in disaster prevention and recovery. UN Volunteers were instrumental in the long-term response to the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, for example. In the aftermath of conflict, UN Volunteers can also be deployed to support a multi-dimensional recovery process that focuses on livelihoods, shelter, governance, the environment and various social dimensions, including the reintegration of displaced populations.
