World Telecommunication and Information Society Day is marked on 17 May and is an opportunity to promote the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) for development. The official theme this year is Women and Girls in ICT.

  Tenth Anniversary of the International Year of Volunteers    
Volunteering and community engagement empower people to change the world from the grassroots up, especially when enabled by strong partnerships at every level.

During 2011, the tenth anniversary of the International Year of Volunteers, stakeholders joined to recognize the positive impacts of volunteering,  facilitate people’s contributions to peace and the Millennium Development Goals through volunteering, build and reinforce volunteering networks, and promote the values of volunteering.
