UNV and Senegal Institute of Management sign agreement to deploy UN University Volunteers
The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme and the Institut supérieur de management (Higher Institute of Management – ISM) in Senegal, signed a partnership to provide volunteering opportunities for ISM students as UN University Volunteers.
By signing this partnership, ISM, a leader in francophone Africa, becomes the first university in Africa to integrate the UN University Volunteer category in the academic curriculum and offer its students the opportunity to promote volunteerism as a key asset for sustainable peace and development in Africa.
ISM students will be deployed in UN agencies in Senegal as UN University Volunteers, to leverage their knowledge and skills in several areas of expertise and dedicate their creativity and energy to peace and development in their six-month assignments.
The main goal of this joint project is to enhance the capacity and engagement of youth in development issues, as key actors of change.
“I congratulate ISM for joining us in this great human adventure of sharing and helping. Signing this partnership highlights ISM as a reference and our pilot partner in Africa to promote volunteerism and contribute to the development of Senegal,” said Afke Bootsman, Manager of UNV's Regional Office in West and Central Africa, who attended the signing ceremony in Dakar, Senegal, on Wednesday 13 June 2018.

Expressing his satisfaction and gratitude, Mr Mouhamed Moustapha Dieye, President of ISM, emphasized the key role of volunteerism in the African societies,
“As an African Institute and leader in the field of education, this programme has a great symbolic value. The spirit of volunteerism is already deeply rooted in the habits and customs of our societies. So, through this agreement, opportunity is offered to our young students to upgrade their skills and to continue this tradition of learning about others”.

Of the 55 UN Volunteers currently deployed in Senegal, 13 are UN Youth Volunteers. The UNV Regional Office for West and Central Africa expects this number to increase considerably in the future, with other academic institutions and private/public partners joining in deploying UN University Volunteers through UNV.
