Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of Regional Advisor, Noncommunicable Diseases Prevention, UHC/NCDs or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the Technical Officer will:
• Conducting stakeholder analysis, literature and desk reviews as inputs for regional/country situation analysis on childhood cancer;
• Developing presentations and briefs;
• Assist in in drafting, formatting and editing normative and communication document on the WHO Global Initiative for Childhood Cancers initiative and liaise with necessary partners across the three levels of WHO;
• Support the adaptation and dissemination of GICC technical package and tools in the Eastern Mediterranean Region;
• Assist in organizing regional and country meetings/workshops including webinars related to GICC;
• Assist in monitoring GICC implementation progress in priority countries, liaising with WCO, project partners and contributing to the documentation of country progress/case studies/reports to donors;
• Provide support to other related areas of cancer work as deemed appropriate;
• Develop and submit a progress report at the end of the assignment.

Bachelor degree or equivalent

- University degree (Bachelor's level) in medicine, public health or related areas directly relevant to cancer control.

- Advanced university degree in a health-related field will be an asset.

• At least 5 up to 10 years of professional work experience at the national and/or international level in:
• Clinical or academic experience in the field of cancer control/oncology;
• Experience in conducting literature reviews.

• Clinical or academic experience in childhood cancer;

• Field and/or developing country experience in the field of cancer control;
• Relevant experience, especially in countries in the EMR.

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of Team Lead at Regional Emergency Director (RED) or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the Technical Officer will:

  • Provide support in collaboration with technical leads and other teams, in the development, implementation and monitoring of the technical, operational, and HR work plans under WHO Health Emergencies;
  • Contribute to the preparation of monitoring and progress reports, briefings, proposals, reports and communications required for strategic decision making;
  • Assist in coordinating and facilitating improved information and knowledge management within WHE for the purpose of monitoring and evaluation, organizational learning and reporting, with a particular responsibility for maintaining and improving the activities databases;
  • Facilitate communication between Regional Emergency Director and Incident Management Support Team (IMST) technical leads and country support teams and route relevant requests;
  • Support in the development of action plans, analysis and monitoring of COVID-19 response at country and regional level;
  • Support in documenting success stories and lessons learned in the context of WHE’s areas of work.
Bachelor degree or equivalent
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher technical diploma in International Relations, social sciences, public policy, public health, or other related field from an accredited academic institution.

Monitoring and evaluation, Emergency response, immediate relief operations, and post-conflict humanitarian aid operations, Other emergency management experience
  • A minimum of five years' experience, at the national and/or international levels, emergency programmes and/or countries in the Region. Working in the UN or other international development organization is an asset.
  • Advanced higher degree (Master’s or equivalent) in a relevant area, e.g. Public Health, Epidemiology, Infectious Diseases or area related to emergency;
  • At least two years of relevant professional experience in project management in a public health or closely related field;
  • Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills;
  • Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development;
  • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel;
  • Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment;
  • Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines;
  • Sound security awareness;
  • Have affinity with or interest in Public Health and humanitarian volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System.
