Last year in West and Central Africa, 54 UN Volunteers out of 230 globally contributed to UN Women’s missions towards reducing discrimination against women and girls, empowering women and achieving equality between women and men. They did so ih many functions, including as Programme Assistants, Project Coordination Officers, Gender Experts, Communications Officers and Monitoring and Evaluation Specialists.

Grace Otieno, a UN Volunteer who serves as an Air Operations Planning Officer at the MOVCON aviation section of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO). 

Posted in Goma, Grace is working in a largely male-dominated sector. Her everyday tasks include planning for daily flights, coordinating ramp activities for smooth and timely flights and briefing the crew on their daily route requirements as per UN procedures.

From 2006 to 2017, the PBF allocated US $772 million to 41 recipient countries. The PBF works across pillars and supports integrated UN responses to fill critical gaps; respond quickly and with flexibility to political opportunities, and catalyze processes and resources in a risk-tolerant manner. 

UNV is a strategic partner and efficient interlocutor of the PBF at the national/local levels through the mobilization of committed and skilled UN Volunteers in remote locations.

SDG 1: No poverty, SDG 5: Gender equality

Maroua, Cameroon: Jimmy Henry Nyingcho, 31 years old, is a national UN Volunteer, married and a father of one. He is assigned with UN Women Cameroon as the gender, women empowerment and social cohesion expert, and he is helping women refugees gain skills to generate income. These women are based at the Minawao refugee camp in Maroua, that hosts close to 60,000 refugees from Nigeria.

Batouri, Cameroun: Esther Myrice Kane Awussa Volontaire ONU affectée au à Batouri, à l’est du Cameroun. Elle travaille auprès dans le camp de réfugiés de Timangolo, et travaille avec l’ethnie des bororos.

Dans cette communauté, la place des hommes et des femmes est traditionnellement séparés et les contacts limités. Les hommes et les femmes ne se mélangent pas en public. La communauté suit les conseils du chef traditionnel, envers qui il existe toute une série de rituels.

The United Nations is there to help get the aid flowing and to enable recovery and rehabilitation. UN Volunteers play a key part in delivering this assistance, and often at the front line.
