Candidate age: between 18 and 29 throughout the entire duration of their assignment. Nationals of the country of assignment are not eligible, except the assignments in Headquarters duty stations.

Under the direct supervision of the UN Resident Coordinator and Deputy Commissioner-General for the UN at Expo2020, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  • Support the Expo focal point in all Expo related matters for the UAE United Nations Country Team (UNCT); that includes supporting them in their liaison and queries which related to the activities during the Expo in consultation with the Head of RC Office as needed;
  • Support the UNCT in its exhibit of the work of the UN in and with the UAE; support in managing the exhibit and UNCT engagement;
  • Support the production of social media content for the UN on the Expo and UN activities therein, and of relevance to the UN agency mandates;
  • Support the UN Pavilion Manager on special events and UN international Days to be held at the UN Pavilion, and specifically UN Day;
  • Support the Identification of exhibits and special events during the Expo of interest to UN personnel and communicate them to the UN Country Team in consultation with the Head of the RC Office;
  • Support the logistics of Expo visits for UN delegations to the Expo site as identified by the DCG;
  • Engage with the public on the mandate of the UN at the UN Pavilion as required and directed;
  • Support the implementation strategies to help direct visitors to the UN Pavilion and to the various UN events and activities;
  • Support the development of the Communication products on the UN’s engagement at the Expo;
  • Support the close out of the UN Pavilion and the historical documentation of the UN’s engagement during Expo2020.

Bachelor degree or equivalent

Bachelor's degree in a relevant field of expertise (e.g. International development, event management, project management, photography, social media and communications).

  • Demonstrated interest and/or experience (up to 2 years) in International development, event management, United Nations mandate/s, project management, photography, social media and communications
  • Proactiveness, able to work independently with limited supervision, creative spirit, enjoying interaction with people, team player, organizational skills, stress management skills, and sense of humor.
  • Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded;
  • English(Mandatory), Level - Fluent
  • Arabic(Optional), Level - Working Knowledge

Learning Expectations

Learning and development are a central part of the UN Youth Volunteer’s assignment and take place before, during and after his or her assignment in the field. Ideally, offering diverse opportunities for learning and development aim to strengthen the volunteer’s skills and competences, improve the quality of the assignment and keep the volunteer’s motivation high.

Learning elements for the UN Youth Volunteer include the development of:

  • Professional skills: including specific competencies and reflection on assignment-related abilities; and on-the-job skills such as time management, problem solving, team building; and career preparedness such as interview skills, CV preparation, job searching.
  • Inter-personal skills: including communication and listening skills; multi-cultural awareness and cultural competency; and conflict and stress management.
  • Volunteering-related skills: including leadership; civic responsibility; and engagement and active participation.

Beyond the learning opportunities provided by UNV, the host agency will support knowledge and capacity development in the technical areas that are relevant to the UN Youth Volunteer’s assignment. The host agency will provide, at its expense, UN Youth Volunteers with equal opportunity to participate in training courses and workshops offered to its personnel.

Prerequisites

This assignment is funded by the Government of Korea, therefore only Korean nationals are eligible. Candidates who have served as UN Youth Volunteer funded by Korea before are not eligible to apply. Former UN University Volunteers are eligible.

Candidates must be between 22 and 29 years of age throughout the duration of their service, i.e. born between 1 July 1991 and 1 July 1998.

Selected candidates will be invited to attend an Assignment Preparation Training in Bonn, Germany from 15 – 18 June 2020.

Selection process

Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. The selection will be done by the UN Host Entity at the level of the country of assignment. Interviews will be conducted by the UN Host Entity between 30 March and 24 April. Usually these interviews are competency-based.
