Description of task

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of Coordinator of the field presence, the UN Volunteer contribute to the following tasks:

  • Facilitate the implementation of human rights mandate in the designated area of responsibility (AOR);
  • Assist in monitoring the human rights situation from a given thematic priority and geographical responsibility;
  • In close coordination with the field office coordinator, prepare and undertake fact-finding field missions including the timely drafting of reports and follow-up;
  • Support follow up on individual cases and issues with authorities with the aim of stopping or preventing human rights violations or seeking remedial action by the authorities to prevent similar violations occurring in the future;
  • Support in the establishment and maintenance contacts with government representatives, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), civil society organizations, UN agencies and other partners operating in the AOR;
  • Assist in conducting human rights capacity-building activities and in developing and implementing human rights training programmes;
  • Contribute to and/or draft various reports, communications, briefing notes, statements or other products;
  • Ensure the timely entry of accurate and verified human rights cases into an established database; conduct quality control and deliver statistics and trend reports as required;
  • Ensure the integration of gender perspectives, with specific attention to issues related to women and girls, including conflict related sexual violence, within all assigned human
  • Help with occasional basic administrative tasks when needed
  • Perform other related duties as required.

  • Bachelor´s degree or equivalent combined with two years of relevant qualifying experience might be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree.
  • Type of degree: Law, Political Science, International Relations or any other discipline relevant to human rights.

  • At least 3 years of progressively professional experience in a field related to human rights.
  • Experience in human rights monitoring and reporting is required.
  • Excellent knowledge of international human rights instruments and tools for the promotion and protection of human rights is required.
  • Experience working in Colombia is an asset.
  • Experience working in a developing, conflict or post-conflict setting is an advantage.
  • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel;
  • Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment;
  • Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines;

Description of task

Under the overall supervision of the Head of Office, and the direct supervision of the Unit’s coordinator, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  • Gather information and report on the human rights situation in a designated geographical or thematic area, including through contacts with other United Nations actors, state authorities and the community;
  • Contribute to analysis and reports on human rights concerns, violations and abuses, and the consistency of policies, programme and norms with international human rights standards and the application of economic, social and cultural rights approach;
  • Assist in the designing and the delivering of technical assistance and capacity building to government institutions and civil society with focus on non-discrimination and economic, social and cultural rights.
  • Undertake monitoring missions and reporting, use the OHCHR database to enter cases and document allegations and violations of human rights violations with focus on non-discrimination and gender;
  • Cooperate in the organization of seminars, workshops and consultations at the national and local level to promote knowledge of standards and jurisprudence in the area of economic, social and cultural rights, and how such standards are to be used to protect and promote human rights in the context of development;
  • Contribute to the development of papers, briefings, advocacy materials, presentations and methodological tools to promote awareness and understanding of economic, social and cultural rights;
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Advanced University degree, preferably in law, political science, international relations or other disciplines related to human rights. A combination of relevant academic qualifications and experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Description of task

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of the OHCHR West Africa Regional Representative or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UN Volunteer will:

  • Support the OHCHR West Africa Regional Office to implement the work plan and in particular support the implementation of the Liptako Gourma Project
  • Provide administrative support for the implementation of the project
  • Establish and maintain cooperative contacts with government representatives, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), civil society organizations, UN agencies and other partners operating in the Liptako Gourma region:
  • Assist in conducting human rights capacity-building activities and in developing and implementing human rights training programmes per the Liptako Gourma project;
  • Contribute to and/or draft various reports, communications, briefing notes, statements or other products;
  • Conduct fact-finding missions and investigations into abuses/violations of human rights or humanitarian law;
  • Ensure, coordinate and supervise the timely entry of accurate and verified human rights cases into the Project database; conduct quality control and deliver statistics and trend reports as required;
  • Ensure human rights mainstreaming within UN planning and programming;
  • Ensure the integration of gender perspectives, with specific attention to issues related to women and girls, including conflict-related sexual violence, within all assigned human rights activities;
  • Represent the Liptako Gourma Project at working-level meetings, as relevant;
  • When working with (including supervising) national staff or (non-)governmental counterparts, set aside dedicated time for capacity development through coaching, mentoring and formal and on-the-job training; and
  • Perform other related duties as required
