Under the delegated authority and under the supervision of the Chief Planning, Monitoring & Evaluation, and in close coordination with the principal Advisor of the project “Building Resilience in the Sahel”, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  • Support evidence-based learning to ensure child-sensitive and gender-sensitive approaches are integrated to develop a risk-informed approach to planning and implementation in social sectors at the local level.
  • Design and conduct case studies to document best practices implemented to enhance the capacity of community actors to provide community-based health interventions, quality nutrition-promotion and counselling services to adolescent girls and women of childbearing age especially those most at risk (both vulnerable and disproportionately exposed to specific shocks and stresses).
  • Design and conduct case studies to document best practices implemented to strengthen capacity of young women and men for effective, and inclusive participation (especially for girls and women) in intergenerational social dialogue and in community development engagement.
  • Design and conduct case studies to document best practices implemented to strengthen the capacities of families, communities and municipalities to support an equitable access, retention and protection of children in schools with a special emphasis on girls.
  • Design and conduct case studies to document best practices implemented to strengthen capacity of vulnerable groups, adolescent girls and boys and young women and men for citizen engagement in community and municipality planning, local taxation and social accountability mechanisms.
  • Design and conduct case studies to document the communal WASH approach, which aims to support communes in providing a complete water, hygiene and sanitation package at the community level while supporting local planning that takes into account climate change issues and emergency situations.
  • Support organization of internal workshops to ensure progressive learning and lessons learning from each sector supported by UNICEF (health, nutrition, WASH, education, child protection, social protection)
  • Perform other duties related to generation of strong evidence base from study cases to access the effectiveness of the model of resilient communities in the Niger, as needed.
  • Support to data collection and strengthening of national data collection and analysis capacities on cross-sectoral issues (gender, equity, etc.)

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to:

  • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day);
  • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
  • Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities;
  • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
  • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly arrived UN Volunteers;
  • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.
Master degree or equivalent
  • Master’s degree in international development, public affairs, international relations, political science, communication or other related fields.

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of the Senior Human Rights Officer (Coordinator), leading the implementation at the field level of the OHCHR G5 Sahel Compliance Framework Project (FC-G5S) in Bamako, Mali, and under the direct supervision of the Team Leader for Burkina Faso, or his/her designated representative(s), the UN Volunteer will perform the following tasks:

  • Facilitate the implementation of human rights mandate in the designated area of responsibility (AOR);
  • Contribute to the implementation of the Compliance Framework of the FC-G5S;
  • Gather information, analyse and report on the human rights situation in the designated AOR, including through close cooperation with other United Nations actors and the community;
  • Follow up on individual cases of violation of human rights and international humanitarian law and related issues with authorities, with the aim of stopping or preventing human rights violations or seeking remedial action by the authorities to prevent similar violations occurring in the future;
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of strategies aiming at enhanced Protection of Civilians in the AoR;
  • Establish and maintain cooperative contacts with government representatives, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), civil society organizations, UN agencies and other partners operating in the AOR;
  • Assist in conducting human rights capacity-building activities and in developing and implementing human rights training programmes per the Compliance Framework Project;
  • Contribute to and/or draft various reports, communications, briefing notes, statements or other products;
  • Conduct fact-finding missions and investigations into abuses/violations of human rights or humanitarian law;
  • Ensure, coordinate and supervise the timely entry of accurate and verified human rights cases into the Project database; conduct quality control and deliver statistics and trend reports as required;
  • Ensure human rights mainstreaming within UN planning and programming;
  • Ensure the integration of gender perspectives, with specific attention to issues related to women and girls, including conflict-related sexual violence, within all assigned human rights activities;
  • Represent the Compliance Framework Project at working level meetings, as relevant;
  • When working with (including supervising) national staff or (non-)governmental counterparts, set aside dedicated time for capacity development through coaching, mentoring and formal and on-the-job training; and
  • Perform other related duties as required

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are encouraged to integrate the UN Volunteers programme mandate within their assignment and promote voluntary action through engagement with communities in the course of their work. As such, UN Volunteers should dedicate a part of their working time to some of the following suggested activities:

  • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day);

  • Advanced higher degree (Master’s or equivalent) in Law, Political Science, International Relations, Social Science, or another discipline relevant to human rights. A first-level university degree or equivalent in combination with relevant training and/or professional experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree;

  • Three years of work experience at the national and/or international level in a field related to human rights.
  • Knowledge of international human rights instruments and tools for the promotion and protection of human rights is required.
  • Knowledge of international humanitarian law is desirable.
  • Experience in human rights monitoring and reporting is desirable.
  • Experience in research and drafting documents, such as reports, is desirable.
  • Experience working in Sahel and especially in Burkina Faso is desirable.
  • Experience working in a developing, conflict or post-conflict setting is an advantage.
  • Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment
  • Experience entering, managing and analyzing large quantities of data/case information, including in databases, is desirable.
