Under the direct supervision of Associate Protection Officer, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  • Through relationships with persons of concern, authorities and network of partners stay abreast of political, social, economic and cultural developments that have an impact on the protection environment and provide advice to senior management.
  • Ensure that the perspectives, capacities, needs and resources of the persons of concerns are reflected in the protection strategy, planning processes and operations plan addressing the specific protection needs of women and men, children, youth and older persons, persons with disabilities, minority groups such as sexual minorities and persons living with HIV/AIDS;
  • Utilize the IDPs footprint during the planning process;
  • Coordinate the promotion of international refugee law principles and standards and also IDP legislation or policies ensuring that all sectors and clusters fulfill their responsibilities mainstreaming protection;
  • Coordinate the implementation and monitoring of programmes ensuring that identified protection needs, including an Age, Gender and Diversity (AGD) approach, are adequately addressed;
  • Provide policy guidance and operational support to UNHCR and partners on all protection related issues;
  • Provide legal advice and guidance on protection issues to internal and external interlocutors; ensure legal assistance is accessible to persons of concern; liaise with competent authorities to ensure the issuance of personal and other relevant documents to persons of concern (civil documentation, in particular birth certificates);
  • Monitor, and assist with the intervention in cases of refoulement, expulsion and other protection incidents through working relations with governments and other partners;
  • Assist in the coordinated implementation and oversight of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all protection/solutions activities;
  • Ensure that durable solutions through voluntary repatriation, local integration and where appropriate, resettlement are sought and provided to the largest possible number of persons of concern;
  • Ensure through direct action and advocacy with more senior protection staff that the necessary resources are allocated to enable protection activities to identify and address protection and assistance gaps;
  • Support a consultative process with government counterparts at local levels, partners and persons of concern to develop and implement integrated strategies that address the key protection priorities, including, for example, child protection, education and SGBV, and solutions approaches;
  • Promote confidence building and conflict resolution among populations of concern, authorities and host communities;
  • Maintain protection presence through regular field missions and reports, making direct contact with persons of concern, host communities, local authorities and partners. In operations applying the humanitarian cluster system, contribute to ensuring that the response of the Protection Cluster is grounded in an AGD-compliant strategy which covers all assessed and prioritized protection needs of the affected populations;
  • Contribute to the Protection team's information management component which: provide disaggregated data on populations of concern and their problems; researches, collects and disseminates relevant protection information and good practices to enhance protection delivery and provide technical advice if necessary;
  • Ensure participatory, community-based protection and AGD approaches are included in, strategies and plans in the country operation;
  • Support persons of concern to develop structures that enhance their participation and protection.
Bachelor degree or equivalent

Type of Degree: University degree in Law, Iinternational Law, International Relations, Social Sciences, Political Sciences or related field.

  • Stay abreast of political, social, economic and cultural developments that have an impact on the protection environment and provide advice to senior management;
  • Support UNHCR’s consultative process with local government counterparts, partners and persons of concern for effective needs assessment and planning;

En el marco de la autoridad delegada y bajo la supervisión de la Jefa del Área de Protección Infantil o su representante designado, el Voluntario de la ONU llevará a cabo las siguientes tareas:

  1. Monitorear la situación de los niños, niñas y adolescentes (NNA) bajo el Protocolo de Protección a Migrantes (MPP), así como de otros niños, niñas y adolescentes migrantes, particularmente los no acompañados, en Ciudad Juárez y las áreas circundantes, según sea necesario.
  2. Coordinar la respuesta de UNICEF en cuanto a población MPP y migrante en Ciudad Juarez.
  3. Brindar orientación al equipo de protección de UNICEF en Ciudad Juarez para el despliegue efectivo de la respuesta, asegurando la coherencia de las intervenciones, así como la supervisión y el monitoreo.
  4. En coordinación con la Jefa de Protección y la Representante Adjunta, definir la estrategia de apoyo a mediano plazo, que se enfoque en el fortalecimiento de capacidades, la implementación de la Ruta de Protección para NNA en situación de Migración, y la implementación del Modelo de Cuidados Alternativos.
  5. Propiciar y mantener una coordinación estrecha con autoridades, miembros de la sociedad civil, con otras agencias ONU (OIM y ACNUR), identificando necesidades, adaptando la respuesta de forma estratégica y asegurando una buena colaboración.
  6. Asistir a reuniones interinstitucionales con socios gubernamentales, organizaciones internacionales y organizaciones de la sociedad civil sobre la situación de NNA bajo el MPP y migrantes.
  7. Fortalecer la coordinación de UNICEF con las autoridades de protección, así como con los proveedores de servicios de atención en México, en caso de que niñas, niños y adolescentes lo requieran.
  8. Mantener una comunicación regular con el equipo de Protección para asegurar una orientación estratégica.
  9. Cada semana participar en una reunión virtual con el equipo de emergencias de UNICEF para proporcionar una actualización de la situación en terreno y obtener orientación.

El beneficio principal de prestar servicio como Voluntario/a ONU es la satisfacción personal que brinda la asignación de voluntariado, puesto que implica repercutir de manera positiva en favor de la paz y el desarrollo. El programa VNU cubrirá:

Under the overall supervision of the Protection Associate and as a member of the Protection Unit, the UN Volunteer will provide assistance to the UNHCR Country Office in Lusaka in the areas of protection and voluntary repatriation through the following specific actions:

  • Support the Protection Unit with the processing of requests from refugees in urban areas and the settlements for voluntary repatriation through Lusaka;
  • Update repatriation-related events in the ProGres registration database;
  • Support the Office with the dissemination of information to refugees residing in the urban area, particularly on voluntary repatriation;
  • Provide counseling, referral and protection services to persons of concern presenting themselves at the Office, particularly those in need of help with family tracing and reunification, travel documents or social support;
  • Support with the identification of refugees with specific needs using, inter alia, the Age, Gender and Diversity Mainstreaming Strategy, conduct assessments and refer them to relevant bodies, in consultation with the Protection Associate and other relevant staff in the Protection Unit as well as AAHI and Caritas Czech Republich as relevant to ensure an adequate response is made;
  • Receive applications for UN Convention Travel Documents from refugees, verify the information provided and prepare requests to the Commissioner for Refugees;
  • Facilitate the family reunification of refugees, including through the International Commitee of the Red Cross (ICRC) office in Harare;
  • Draft and type routine correspondence, counseling reports, documents and reports and keep the Office’s individual case filing system up-to-date;
  • Assist the Protection Unit with the preparation of protection trainings;
  • Receive and counsel asylum seekers, refugees and other spontaneous visitors seeking protection information or interventions;
  • Performs other duties as required.

  • Observe, respect and if need be propose review of protection related Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs);
  • Provide functional and administrative support in all protection related Age, Gender and Diversity (AGD) based programming with implementing and operational partners;
  • Provide functional and administrative support in implementing participatory approaches, needs assessments, monitoring, reporting and case management;
  • Support assessments on durable solutions through voluntary repatriation, local integration and where appropriate, resettlement;
  • Facilitate liaison with competent authorities for the issuance of personal and other relevant documents;

Candidate age: between 18 and 29 throughout the entire duration of their assignment. Applicants must be nationals of or legal residents in the country of assignment.

Reporting to EVAW/G Program Specialist (Team Leader), the Programme Analyst provides programme support to the effective management of UN Women programmes in the Tanzania by contributing in the programme design, formulation, implementation and evaluation. S/he supports the delivery of UN Women programmes by analyzing results achieved during implementation and supporting appropriate application of systems and procedures. She/he works in close collaboration with the programme and operations team, UN Women HQ staff, Government officials, multi and bi-lateral donors and civil society ensuring successful UN Women programme implementation under portfolio.

  • Supports the implementation of the EVAWG ongoing programme initiatives, in line with UNDAP II.
  • Assists in the development of project documents on EVAWG through research, mapping of existing initiatives and discussions with partners;
  • Supports the development of briefing papers and background documents to highlight progress of implementation of the UN Joint Programs in the country;
  • Supports the development of project agreements with community-based organizations, regional authorities, other government institutions and civil society organistions;
  • Participates in UN Women and other UN agency meetings relevant to the thematic areas of EVAWG and supports development of reports on key points and follow up actions;
  • Supports the tracking of partnership agreements, their implementation and adherence by partners to timelines and UN Women standards, rules and regulations;
  • Supports the drafting of internal reports and reports to development partners as per reporting requirements and timelines;
  • Supports the organisation of meetings and conferences, including compilation of relevant documentation and communication with partners;
  • Participates in meetings of UN Women, other UN agencies and development partners, produces reports and contributes to discussions on the advancement of UN Women’s programmatic portfolio in this area;
  • Supports review and quality assurance of project partner agreements and monitoring reports and assists in the provision of feedback and comments to partners;
  • Supports the development of knowledge products on the Kigoma Joint Programme, highlighting the key successes and lessons learnt;
  • Supports the review of financial reports and the provision of inputs and comments to partner organisations as per agreements with UN Women
Bachelor degree or equivalent

Bachelor Degree in Gender, Development Studies, Community Development or other related fields;

Demonstrated interest and/or experience (up to 2 years) in the areas of EVAW;

Motivated to contribute towards peace and development and to serve others;

Good interpersonal, networking and communication skills;

Willingness to contribute and work as part of a team;

Fluency in spoken and written Kiswahili and English (language) are required, and knowledge of advocacy, lobbying and negotiation is an asset;

Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded;
