Under the direct supervision of the Team Leader, Field Integrated Operations Centre, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  • Providing situational awareness of Unity State, South Sudan, through the compilation of daily reports;
  • Reviewing all UN and non-UN information sources for drafting daily situational/operational reports on a 24/7 basis;
  • Submitting the daily report through the FIOC Team Leader to the Joint Operations Center at UNMISS headquarters in Juba for synthesis into external and internal situational/operational information;
  • Preparing analytical and technical briefings, reports, profiles and trend analyses on issues in Unity State, South Sudan;
  • Drafting Flash and Incidents Reports and any necessary updates, to meet the need for speedy and increased information flow in response to a significant event or during an emergency, crisis or rapidly deteriorating situation;
  • Ensuring that relevant written inputs are prepared for appropriate mission reports;
  • Collecting, collating and verifying reports from sections of the UNMISS Field Office in Unity;
  • Maintaining up-to-date knowledge and understanding of political, social and security issues;
  • Monitoring and gathering information on events or incidents that may affect the implementation or the safety of the Mission and its mandate;
  • Managing information to ensure its accessibility and utility;
  • Contributing to the DPKO database SAGE through the provision of inputs and coordination with sections of the UNMISS Field Office in Unity and the Joint Operations Center at UNMISS headquarters in Juba;
  • Performing other related duties as required.
Bachelor degree or equivalent

Degree level: Bachelor's degree or equivalent. Masters degree would be well regarded; Lesser qualification with relevant experience.

Type of Degree: Degree in Political science, International Relations, Law, Conflict Management, Security or any related field required.

  • Minimum three (3) years’ relevant experience in information analysis in conflict or post-conflict environment is required;
  • Experience in or knowledge of the conflict dynamics in South Sudan is highly desirable;
  • Previous experience in a Joint Operations Centre or Joint Mission Analysis Cell would be an added advantage.

Political affairs and political reporting
  • Computer skills: Solid computer skills, including full proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word etc.) and other IT applications and office technology equipment;
  • The candidate must have advanced skills in English drafting and report writing, analytical skills, databases, and presentation software as well as other electronic media;
  • Have affinity with or interest in humanitarian relief, post-conflict situations, volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System;
  • Sound security awareness.

Sous la supervision directe du chef de l’unité Radio, le/la Volontaire de l’ONU / Producteur Radio aura les tâches suivantes :

  • Participer à la planification, à l’organisation et à la coordination des opérations de l’unité Radio de la mission, conformément à son mandat;
  • Développer des idées de contenu et de grille d’antenne pour MIKADO FM qui émet 24h/24;
  • Lancer de nouveaux projets radio, et développer, rédiger et enregistrer, selon les besoins, des programmes de radio originaux, des spots, des reportages et programmes d’actualités pour diffusion en français;
  • Travailler avec l’équipe nationale à la production quotidienne de contenus de qualité sur les antennes de Mikado FM;
  • Créer des identités de programme, des thèmes musicaux, des styles, et superviser/entreprendre toute autre tâche de production;
  • Participer au renforcement des capacités des collègues nationaux à travers le coaching, le mentorat ou le partage d’expériences;
  • Participer au développement et à la mise en œuvre de la stratégie numérique de Mikado FM, incluant les réseaux sociaux, en veillant notamment à la qualité de la langue et des productions;
  • S’assurer de la mise en œuvre d’une programmation juste, équilibrée, impartiale et respectueuse des normes élevées en matière d’information;
  • Sous la direction du/de la Chef de la Radio, préparer des rapports périodiques sur l'état de mise en œuvre la stratégie de la radio;
  • Entretenir les relations de travail les autres sections de la MINUSMA, les agences des Nations Unies, les organisations non gouvernementales, la société civile dans le but d’enrichir la programmation de Mikado FM;
  • Développer des relations de travail avec le secteur des médias du pays hôte et au niveau international;

Under the direct supervision of the Head of UNMIK Office of Strategic Communications and Public Affairs (OSCPA), the UN Volunteer undertakes the following tasks:

  • Drafts engaging human interest stories, features and multimedia scripts about the mission and its implementing partners’ activities and their impact, for dissemination on the mission public platforms (e.g. mission website and social media platforms);
  • Drafts complex and politically sensitive material such as press releases, if-asked lines, press packs, messages, talking points, and responses to media enquiries;
  • Proofreads and copyedits drafts prepared by other officers;
  • Plays a leading role in implementing the digital communications strategy of the office; keeping the mission website and social media platforms updated on a regular basis; provides support to other offices to keep information about their office and activities up-to-date on the mission digital platforms;
  • Assists the section chief in planning, coordinating and overseeing the production of a range of multi-media content (ex. photo stories and videos) in promoting issues in support of the mission’s mandate and its communications strategy;
  • Assists the section chief in designing and implementing public information campaigns, outreach events and programmatic activities in support of the mission mandate;
  • Contributes to internal communications of the mission and the office administrative tasks (ex. Drafting staff broadcasts, memos and reports);
  • Assists the section chief in designing and implementing programmatic activities (ex. drafting project proposals; liaising with implementing partners);
  • Represents the head of the office in meetings and events if and when required;

  • This job requires excellent storytelling and writing skills and practical knowledge of news writing conventions, including but not limited to ability to draft human-interest stories and edit/proofread and summarise English documents.

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of The Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for the Horn of Africa or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UN Volunteer will:

  • Conduct research on issues pertaining to peace and security as well as political developments in assigned countries in the Horn of Africa Region;
  • Prepare a range of internal reports and briefing papers, including but not limited to situation reports, political profiles, notes to file, background papers, briefing notes, code cables and talking points for the Special Envoy and other senior staff;
  • Develops and maintain professional relationships, which support the work of the Office, including representatives of international organizations and other relevant partners;
  • Monitor information and news sources for the production of daily news clippings as well as media reports;
  • Follow up on political and security developments in assigned countries in the Horn region;
  • Reach out to Civil Society Organizations, think thanks, academia in the Horn Region for in-depth analysis of the political and security situation;
  • Undertake other relevant tasks and assignments as requested.
Master degree or equivalent

Master's degree in International Relations, Political Science or related discipline.

  • At least 3 years of relevant work experience in political affairs, government, diplomacy, peacebuilding, conflict resolution or international development.
  • Prior experience in political analysis and reporting is essential, preferably in the context of Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Proven ability or interest to work with government officials or International, Regional or Sub-Regional organizations is an asset.
